Overview:

This site calculates and displays the predicted noise impact of wind farm turbines on any given geographical location using google maps. It allows members of the public to request the inclusion of a new prediction location or Wind Farm. Predications are calculated using the ISO 9613-2 standard taking the Spherical Spreading Model. Where appropriate the Institute of Acoustics guidence notes are used. We encourage you to make requests so that the map can be as representative as possible of the situation on the ground.

What is displayed:

Wind farms are colour coded to show their planning stage and noise sensitive locations (NSL's) are colour coded based on their calculated sound pressure level (see legend). It is important to note that the predicted noise levels are NOT the noise level which will be present at the location but are the level of contribution that wind turbines will make to that level. In the event that the local background noise is below the predicted level then the wind farm will form the dominant noise in the environment. In the event the background noise is higher than the wind farm then it will form just part of the overall measured noise level.
Most planning compliance figures are quoted in L90 and this is typically calculated as 2dB or 3dB less than an predicted level. i.e. an prediction of 40dB might be used to put in place a compliance limit of L90=38dB(A)

How do db levels compare (all values dB(A)leq):

Term definition for calculations

SPL Turbine = Sound Power Level (SWL) + D - Ageo - Aatm - Agr - Abar - Amisc
SPL Wind farm = Sum of (SPLTurbine within 3km radius of a receiver location)

Note 1: Sound Power Levels (SWL) are taken from manufacturer documentation where available and the 10m/s figure is used so as to calculate the "worst case scenario".
Note 2: Unknown turbine type - for some wind farms the turbine type is not know - for these we have assumed a generic type generating 105db(A) at source.

Word of caution: the prediction models are just that a prediciton and do not include specific adjustments for localised variations in wind speed, wind direction, temperature inversion or wind shear. All of these may have the effect of increasing the actual vs the predicted results. It may be appropriate to add a general extra 5dB of conservatism to all predictions and perhaps up to to 10 dB in extreme adverse conditions.

Models selectable for display:

Across the world there are variations in the implementation of the ISO propagation model used for wind farm planning. We allow you to select two of these to show the difference in impact they have.

1:Spherical ISO with simple Aatm factor and ground calculated as if hard ground:

2:Spherical ISO model with simple Aatm ground calculated as if hard ground and a 3dB(A) factor for concave/valley landscape:
